We often underestimate the importance of great office furniture! Actually, we shouldn’t. We spend most of our day sitting in our office chairs or typing at our desks, whether we work in our home office or a corporate office. Therefore, these pieces of furniture must not only be comfortable, but also ergonomic and aesthetic. And we’ve curated a collection of furniture designs that meet all of these criteria. From a coffin-inspired office chair to a foldable cardboard desk, these innovative furniture designs are not only great for maintaining a healthy posture, they’re also super comfortable for working and will fit perfectly with your modern office decor. Enjoy!
1. coffin office chair
Are you someone who absolutely loathes your hopeless job at the company, then we may have found the chair for you! Shaped like a coffin, this wooden chair recently took the internet by storm. A Twitter user shared it on Sept. 7, and everyone who’s downright sick of their job took full notice.
Why is it remarkable?
The conceptual coffin chair perfectly represents all the dreaded emotions employees feel throughout their workday. It mirrors the sense of doom one experiences when one has to endure another pointless meeting that could have been an email.
what we like
- Inspired by Rene Magritte’s painting The Balcony (1950)
- He perfectly captures the feeling of having a dead end job
What we don’t like
- While it’s a crazy concept, the design isn’t sized to fit different sizes
2. The Flow wall desk
The Flow Wall Desk is great office furniture for small spaces. It’s the kind of piece of furniture that is both functional and decorative while maintaining a rather simple design philosophy and being sustainable too!
Why is it remarkable?
The Flow Wall Desk is something that could fulfill all of these requirements for a piece of furniture. “Stowed” and folded, it looks like a work of art on your wall with its minimalist, geometric shapes. Initially it’s a flat canvas and when you unfold it it looks like a “spiral caterpillar” and you realize that it turns into a desk on which you can work, read or write in your journal.
what we like
- Multifunctional design
- Consistent
- Features a flat pack shape
What we don’t like
- Folding and unfolding the desk whenever you need it means we can’t have a constant setup
3. Find turning point
This table design concept turns this multipurpose setup into a sort of puzzle game, with pieces fitting in different places depending on what you intend to use the furniture for.
Why is it remarkable?
Short for Finding Turn Point, the FTP table looks like a regular rectangular piece of furniture, except for a semicircle that appears to be embedded in its top. Not only does this orange circle look different from the rest of the black table, it’s actually a separate piece that can be moved around and away from the rest of the table.
what we like
Moving this form and changing its position becomes both a symbol and a ritual that can help your mind shift to a different type of activity depending on which one you associate with its position
What we don’t like
- Because red is a strong color, the table needs to have more neutral options for personalization
4. Refold
Laptops don’t really work on the lap these days, at least not comfortably. You can pick up a foldable desk, but most of these are heavy, cumbersome, cramped, or all of the above. Refold solves all of that, except maybe the awkwardness, with a material familiar from many DIY projects: cardboard.
Why is it remarkable?
With just a few pieces that fold into a relatively thin rectangle, you can have a standing desk or a sit-down desk, or both; Anywhere there is room for you to set up your ad hoc workspace.
what we like
- Features a triple weave cross paneled design that allows the table to hold a laptop, monitor and more
What we don’t like
- Cardboard isn’t good for liquids either, but an optional waterproof panel gives you some peace of mind and gives the desk a distinct white accent
5. The axis concept
With this more mechanical standing desk concept, you can enjoy the benefits of a healthier work life without breaking your back or the bank.
Why is it remarkable?
The Axis concept uses a simple axis mechanism, hence the name, to move the larger desktop surface up or down as needed. As a bonus, part of the desk actually stays in place and is a good place to put items you’re less likely to move, like supplies or desk organizers. It can even be a temporary bookshelf that stays in the back of your desk when seated or under the table when standing.
what we like
- The simplicity of this system means manufacturers can reduce the number of parts and materials to a minimum
- Sustainable materials can be used because no electronics or even plastics are required
- Spare parts might also be easier to buy, provided the owners themselves cannot make them from a standardized design
What we don’t like
- The setup remains difficult to maintain in the case of a multi-monitor setup that requires more cables and connectivity
6. D-tach
D-Tach is a versatile stool that converts into a small workspace that suits today’s mobile working culture. Our world seems to be getting more mobile every day. Mobile offices, working from home and freelance careers are becoming more popular as we move away from corporate offices. With work culture shifting so much towards mobile lifestyles, our home offices and furniture should reflect this.
Why is it remarkable?
Industrial design student Andrew Chang decided to design a chair that was just right for him. D-Tach is a modular stool that works like a traditional office chair, only to break it down into pieces that provide a small workspace on the go.
what we like
- Transforms into a small workspace
- Fits in most modern offices
What we don’t like
- We’re not sure how comfortable it would be to actually work in the small workspace
7. The ZooZoo Collection
Adding an element of warmth will surely help employees settle into their new work routine after working from home for more than a year. And a great furniture collection could really help with that – like Narbutas’ ZooZoo collection.
Why is it remarkable?
Designed by Annie Lee for workplace furniture brand Narbutas, the ZooZoo collection features an intriguingly tall coffee table and matching stool. The elegant coffee table is 27.2 inches high with a metal base and smooth top. The coffee table is available in two sizes and the metal frame can be customized to the color of your choice. The collection also includes a range of matching poufs, available in a variety of colors and fabrics. The stools are accompanied by upholstered seats.
what we like
- The entire collection is available in one or two colors, so it fits into different interiors
- The poufs can be neatly stowed under the coffee tables and also have practical storage niches for books, folders and other items
What we don’t like
- Not ergonomic for long working hours
8. Iko
“A floating sphere, a concentrated capsule, a sanctuary for the senses” are just some of the things that Ivo Andric prefers to call his design “hanging chair”. Finally, the Iko doesn’t look or feel like a conventional chair. Shaped like a weaver bird’s nest, this small hanging cocoon provides a neat, enclosed space to relax in, allowing you to take a secluded break right in your office.
Why is it remarkable?
Iko is made from a few well-curated materials. Its outer frame consists of machine-made and hand-finished wooden elements with inner cores of metal rods. The staves provide rigidity, the wood gives Iko its noble appeal, and the negative triangular spaces are filled with wool-coated acoustic panels that absorb sound.
what we like
- Almost every aspect of the Iko (except for the metal) is designed with natural materials
What we don’t like
- It must not merge with the furnishing of a modern office
9. The FLO concept
If you work at your desk all day, you definitely don’t need a chair, which makes the work even more tiring, not to mention even dangerous to your health. The FLO concept attempts to change the equation by designing the casual swivel chair as a more visually complete form. Of course, the chair is actually made up of different parts that you have to assemble, but once connected it seems as if the chair comes in one piece from the factory, except for the base and the rotating cylinder of course.
Why is it remarkable?
This design allows the eyes to follow the contour of the chair like running water, hence the name. Perhaps almost incidentally, the overall design of the chair looks futuristic and a bit like something out of an office utopia. The slender shape and twisted structures of the armrests and the curved shape of the backrest give it an almost otherworldly look that would definitely not fit into today’s office environments.
what we like
- Visually striking
- The structure of the chair is actually designed to provide more stability and durability, especially when reclined
What we don’t like
- The shape of the backrest itself may not feel as comfortable after hours of use
10. The HÅG Capisco chair
The ergonomic office chair HÅG Capisco Chair is an innovative chair design that has been equipped with a variety of active seating options that ensure you don’t have to sit still all day! It fits perfectly with standing desks or height-adjustable desks. It is available in twelve different upholstery options as well as three different color options.
Why is it remarkable?
The chair works well for all types of people. Whether you’re a fidgety personality who loves to move, or someone who enjoys stretching and practicing yoga, this chair works perfectly for everyone! It supports every sitting position you may be in – whether you’re sitting backwards, sideways, kneeling, cross-legged, crouching, or more.
what we like
- Height Adjustable – 15″ to 40″
- Supports a maximum weight of 250 pounds
What we don’t like
- The chair’s whimsical shape may not blend harmoniously into modern office spaces
