Shazam! star Zachary Levi now shares his thoughts on the recent drama regarding the decisions made James Gunn and Peter Saffron for DC studios. Many fans have attacked Gunn over some of the decisions he’s made so far, the biggest of them Henry Cavill and the fact that he won’t be coming back to play Superman.
The backlash got so bad that Gunn felt he had to address the “seditious and unkind” things that were said to them, adding that the “disrespectful outcry will never affect our actions.” There’s also speculation that many of the other DC characters will be recast, but we have no idea what they’re actually doing.
The only thing we know for sure right now is that Gunn is writing a new Superman movie, their direction is inspired by the classic DC animated shows, they are developing some Elseworlds projects and Batman will be a big part of the new DC Cinematic Universe they build.
Now Levi comes to Gunn and Safran’s defense and encourages DC fans to “give the new CEOs time to do something special.” He said:
“You have no idea what the rationale is behind any of the ongoing decisions. The amount of conjecture and rumor mill and drama and nonsense that keeps being spun around out there on Instagram and Twitter is ridiculous. It’s incredibly ridiculous. So I would just say be patient and give them some space and some time to try and make something really special. And I think something DC deserves and something that [Zack] Snyder tried, but it just didn’t work out in the end, folks.”
He continued that Gunn and Safran “don’t just make decisions because they like or dislike someone. They make decisions based on what is best for Warner Bros., DC, the entire studio and company, and try to keep as many fans and viewers happy as possible.” He continued:
“If you’re out there and you really like what happened before, you can do that, that’s fine. But realize that there are a lot of people who don’t like these things and we should always try to appeal to as many viewers as possible and make as many people happy as possible. That’s what we’re talking about, and I think that’s what Peter and James are trying to achieve. And it is not an easy position, they have been handed all these things that have already been in many conflicts. So folks, just give them a break. Always with Tranquillity. Get some air first. It’s a holiday, for goodness sake. Just enjoy what the holidays are, give them some time to enjoy the holidays, and let’s see what happens on the other side.
I’m excited to see what Gunn and Safran bring to the table. I’m a huge fan of Gunn’s storytelling, particularly Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films, and I really hope he brings that kind of greatness to the DC Cinematic Universe.
While I appreciate what Levi is trying to do, fans will remain fans and they won’t change. Many of them will continue to lash out and spit hate… until they see the first trailer for James Gunn’s Superman, at which point they will change their tone and start talking about how great the new Superman movie is going to be. That’s how things usually go.
