NHL All-Star Skills Competition 2023: Alex Ovechkin makes headlines List of Participants | News, Results, Highlights, Stats and Rumours

The 2023 NHL All-Star Weekend is upon us, and while we already knew who would be competing for each of the league’s four divisions in Sunrise, Fla., we now know which players will be competing at each event during the skills competition on will compete on Friday evening.

The 2023 NHL All-Star Skills Competition is Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN, and the All-Star Game is Saturday at 3:00 p.m. ET on ABC.

The skill competition features four recurring events, including the Fastest Skater, Hardest Shot, Breakaway Challenge, and Accuracy Shooting challenges. There are also three new Florida-specific events, including the Splash Shot, Pitch ‘n Puck, and Tendy Tandem challenges.

The winner of each event will receive $30,000.

Here’s a breakdown of each challenge and who’s participating.


Upper Deck NHL Fastest Skater

  • Kevin Fiala, Los Angeles Kings

Each player in the Fastest Skater competition skates a full lap around the rink at FLA Live Arena. The player who completes their round in the shortest time wins.

The only player among this year’s competitors to have won the event before is Larkin, who won it in 2016 with a time of 13.172. Makar is the only other competitor to compete in the fastest skater challenge, finishing with a time of 13.834 last year.


Great clips NHL Breakaway Challenge

  • Celebrity goalkeeper: Roberto Luongo
  • Mitchell Marner, Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals/Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins (joint)
  • David Pastrnak, Boston Bruins
  • Matthew Tkachuk, Florida Panthers

Each player in the Breakaway Challenge will show their creativity and skill by going one on one with the goalie trying to score a goal. The winner will be determined by fan voting.

Ovechkin is the player to beat in this competition, having won it three times in his glorious career, in 2008, 2009 and 2011. However, Marner, Pastrnak and Tkachuk will certainly give the veteran some competition.

New this year is the NHL Tendy Tandem Challenge. The league describes the event as follows:

“Eight goalies will compete in this event, with one goalie from each division designated as the goalie shooting and one goalie at the net. The shooting goalies score points based on the accuracy of their shots on the net and the goalies at the net meet onslaughts of three, two or one player based on the number of points the shooting goalie has earned in their tandem.


Enterprise NHL Splash Shot

Like the Tendy Tandem, the Splash Shot Challenge is new this year and takes place on the beach in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Four pairs of players shoot the targets to dunk their opponents.


Honda NHL Accuracy Shooting

The Precision Shooting Challenge has been a staple of the NHL All-Star Skills Competition since its inception. The goal of the competition is to hit the four targets attached to the four corners of the goal as quickly as possible.

None of the players involved in this year’s event have won it in the past, so it should be an intriguing competition.


Chipotle NHL Pitch ‘n Puck

  • Nick Suzuki, Montreal Canadiens

Four players take to the golf course in the brand new Pitch ‘n Puck competition. Using a combination of hockey and golf shots, players play a par 4 with island greens. The player with the lowest score wins.


GEICO NHL Hardest shot

  • Rasmus Dahlin, Buffalo Saber
  • Seth Jones, Chicago Blackhawks

  • Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals
  • Elias Pettersson, Vancouver Canucks

The Hardest Shot challenge has also been a staple of the All-Star game since its inception. The aim of the competition is to see who has the hardest shot. Former Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara owns the NHL record for the hardest shot of 108.8 mph in 2012.

Among the contenders for 2023, Ovechkin is the only player to win the event, having done so in 2013 with a 101.3mph shot.
