by Jony Ive, the designer of iconic Apple products like the iPod music player, the Mac, the Apple Watch and of course the iPhone, has unveiled his latest work: A Red Paper Nose.
But that has to be said, is no ordinary red nose. This is “the most perfect nose in history” and is made to “fit your nose perfectly”.
It is also the most recognizable symbol of British charity Comic Relief, the organization behind the massive Red Nose Day fundraiser that takes place in March each year and has been broadcast by the BBC since 1988. Profits from the sale of the nose, along with other donations, go to various causes.
Comic Relief’s red nose used to be plastic, then in 2020 they produced their first plastic-free red nose. Ive’s nose is made up of 95% plant-based materials, so to speak.
As the video below shows, the redesigned Red Schnoz begins as a small flat crescent moon and emanates into a honeycomb paper ball. It also comes with its own very small carry case.
“We grew up listening to Comic Relief and are proud to support their remarkable work,” Jony Ive said on Comic Relief’s website. “This new and seemingly simple red nose was a fabulously complex little object to design and craft that involved our entire team. We hope it brings a little moment of joy to whoever wears it.”
Since Red Nose Day started 35 years ago, Comic Relief has raised more than £1 billion (about US$1.2 billion) for charity, with tens of millions of pounds coming from sales of red noses. Speaking of which, you can get your red nose designed by Jony Ive here.
I left Apple after 27 extremely successful years with the company. Shortly after leaving, he founded a design company called LoveFrom with friend and longtime collaborator Marc Newson. LoveFrom worked with Apple on various projects until July 2022. In recent years, the British designer has worked with Ferrari, Airbnb and the environmental initiative Terra Carta. I was also Chancellor of the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London for a number of years.
After his red-nosed triumph, the top designer is sure to be spying on his next big project.
