“Everything, everywhere at once” dominates the Oscars

top line

The 95th Academy Awards aired on Sunday and marked the conclusion of awards season as some of the year’s top actors, film industry professionals and Movie of the Year were recognized as Indie Film Everywhere at once triumphed during the ceremony.

Important facts

Everything everywhere at once was the most nominated film with 11 nominations and took home seven trophies, including Best Picture and Best Actress – more than any other film.

All four of the reigning winners – Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Fraser, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan – received their first Oscars during the ceremony; 16 nominees were first-time visitors.

Yeoh, the first Asian woman to win Best Actress, received her award from Halle Berry, the first black woman to win the trophy.

Host Jimmy Kimmel inevitably made a few jokes about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock during last year’s ceremony, but that wasn’t the main focus of his time on stage.

The program included performances by several Best Original Song nominees, including Rihanna (“Lift Me Up” by Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and Lenny Kravitz will sing during the In Memoriam segment. Last year’s ceremony was marred when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, who joked about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith, at the awards ceremony. Will Smith was banned from attending the ceremony for 10 years. Still, the incident is likely to be mentioned at this year’s ceremony. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Bill Kramer said the group has set up an “crisis team” to handle surprises at the event going forward. Typically, Oscar voters ignore blockbuster films when it comes to best picture. But this year, three were nominated for the grand prize: Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water And elvis.
