Brian Cox isn’t shy about saying that “Succession” co-star Jeremy Strong’s method acting gets on his nerves.
“Oh, it’s bloody annoying,” Cox told Town & Country in an interview published Tuesday. “Don’t make me do it.”
While the Scots native has expressed concerns about the impact of Strong’s behavior on his mental health, the 76-year-old has found it more galling than ever lately.
“He’s a very good actor. And the rest of the ensemble agrees. But knowing a character and knowing what the character is doing is just part of the skill set,” he told Town & Country.
“Succession” has become a flagship show for HBO since it premiered in 2018. The hilariously cynical (and often quite Shakespearean) show sees billionaire Logan Roy (Cox) and his children, including son Kendall (Strong), engaged in a dynastic struggle for media industry power amid personal turmoil.
As fans have been waiting for the arrival of season four since 2021, probably no one is more relieved to have filming wrapped up than Cox – who previously told The New Yorker he’s worried about the “crises” Strong is “going through”. by staying in his role .
“He’s still that guy because he feels like if he went anywhere else he would lose it,” Cox told Town & Country. “But he won’t! Strong is talented. He’s damn talented. When you have the gift, celebrate the gift. Go back to your trailer and take a hit of marijuana, you know?”

While writer Michael Schulman provided a revealing piece with his 2021 New Yorker profile on Strong and his penchant for staying in character, it seemed to strike a chord and drew excitement by celebrities like Jessica Chastain to defend her fellow actors.
Strong himself ironically addressed the long-held criticism in another article published on Tuesday.
“Everyone has the right to have their feelings,” he told GQ. “I also think Brian Cox, for example, has earned the right to say what he wants. There was no need to worry or do damage control. I have a lot of love for my siblings and my dad on the show.”
Strong added that method acting is about “autonomous focus” and that this “very lonely thing” has had little to no impact on his co-stars — “other than what they might want to project onto it and how it might make them feel.” .”
The actor notably added that he has no plans to change that. While Cox told The New Yorker in 2021 he was worried his co-star might be getting “exhausted,” the beloved acting titan may be nearing a different kind of exhaustion himself – as he continues to be inundated with requests, people tell them to “fuck” off.”
